What Grassroots Organizing Has Accomplished
in Southeast Massachusetts
- In 1996, we made 10,000 phone calls and registered 1900 voters, defeating
Republican Congressman Peter Blute and electing Jim McGovern.
- In 1997-1999, we won millions in increased funding for affordable child
care, helping to provide support for single mothers thrown off welfare.
- In 1999, we won a $1.50 increase in the Massachusetts minimum wage.
- In 2002, we won a progressive tax package including closing the capital
gains tax loophole, stopping $1.1 billion in statewide budget cuts.
- In 2004, we helped to restore funding for health care, housing, drug
treatment, and welfare training programs that were cut in past years
- In 2004, we are organizing hundreds of volunteers to make tens of thousands
of calls to voters on what is at stake in the 2004 election.
How Grassroots Power Has Made a Difference
- We have organized events of up to 400 people on child care, health care,
welfare, housing and budget cuts, holding our elected officials accountable
- We have organized thousands of people to call or write their legislators
- We have involved hundreds of volunteers, many who are new to social
activism, helping people find a way to make a difference
