1995

  • Coalition for Social Justice forms to fight Newt Gingrich’s Republican Revolution
  • CSJ collects 1000 postcards, helps convince Senator Kerry to cast deciding vote to defeat Balanced Budget Amendment
  • CSJ exposes Congressman Peter Blute’s support for the dismantling of Medicaid and Medicare through public rallies and front-page news stories

1996

  • CSJ petition drive helps convince Clinton to veto Republican budget.  Medicaid is saved and extreme cuts in Medicare are defeated
  • CSJ volunteers call 10,000 voters to help defeat Peter Blute, elect Jim McGovern

1997

  • CSJ joins with CAP to organize Child Care Speak-Out (225 people)
  • CSJ joins with Mass. Senior Action to organize Health Care Speak-Out (450 people)
  • CSJ volunteers gather 7300 signatures to put Clean Elections on ballot

1998

  • CSJ joins with CAP to organize Welfare Time Limits Speak-Out (275 people)
  • CSJ organizes minimum wage Speak-Out in New Bedford, resulting in Commerce & Labor Committee supporting minimum wage legislation
  • CSJ volunteers call 6000 voters; Harshbarger wins Fall River & New Bedford in Governor’s race

1999

  • CSJ plays leading role in winning historic $1.50 minimum wage increase
  • CSJ plays leading role in doubling the Earned Income Tax Credit
  • CSJ joins with Neighbor to Neighbor to organize state-wide Legislative Action Network

2000

  • CSJ calls help win a 10% welfare grant increase, the first increase since 1988
  • CSJ organizes 120 volunteers to make 15,700 calls opposing Questions 4 & 6, making Fall River and New Bedford the only large cities outside of Boston area to vote down Question 4
  • CSJ calls to voters produce margin of victory for re-election of Rep. George Rogers

2001

  • CSJ plays key role in organizing fight-back against demolition of Watuppa Heights
  • CSJ phone callers identify 6700 Brian Pearson supporters, narrowly failing to re-elect him.

2002

  • Won a $1.1 billion tax package to Stop the Cuts, including closing the capital gains tax loophole.
  • Identified 3600 supporters to ensure re-election of Fall River State Rep. David Sullivan.
  • Contacted 11,364 voters for Shannon O’Brien for Governor, identifying 4614 supporters.

2003

  • Helped defeat nearly $300 million in Governor Romney’s proposed cuts
  • Helped provide the margin of victory in a campaign to allow welfare recipients with children 2-5 years of age to substitute education and training for the newly established work requirement
  • Helped win passage of legislation outlawing several corporate tax loopholes worth $170 million, including the Passive Investment Corporation tax loophole
